Artist Bio:
Susan Makara has been an artist since childhood. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Communication Arts and Design from Virginia Commonwealth University. Makara has worked as Assistant Art Director at Model Secondary School for the Deaf on Gallaudet University’s campus in Washington, DC, and as a graphic artist on the PBS series Powerhouse. She has also created cover art for Recorded Books and illustrated storyboards for television commercials.
Makara has been selected for numerous exhibitions and has received multiple awards, including being named Koan Magazine’s Best Emerging Artist in 1994. She was honored as Artist of the Year at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in 2012, where she currently maintains a solo studio in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Her work is held in notable private and public collections, including those of Barbara Bush, James Brady, the Jordanian Royal Palace, the Buenos Aires School of Art Museum, and U.S. embassies in Germany, Nigeria, and Nepal.
