Carlos Catasse (1944-2010) was born in Santiago, Chile as Carlos Tapia Sepúlveda. Later, he would form his new last name by combining the first two letters of his first, middle, and last name. He was interested in painting from early childhood, and is considered self-taught before attending the School of Applied in Arts in Santiago. Drawn to the landscape of Ecuador, he settled in Quito in 1969, where he would remain for the rest of his life. His paintings are known for their colors, and to friends Catasse was known as The Palette, because of his technique of prioritizing color over brushstroke. His compositions, approached through a kaleidoscope of different traditions, reveal a range of artistic influences and experiments in style, especially evident in his windmill series. Over his lifetime, Carlos Catasse received multiple prestigious Latin American art awards and prizes, and exhibited his work worldwide.
