Aina Nergaard “Hearts 2” 2005
Oil on canvas
Signed and numbered by artist
24 x 16
A vivid figurative composition by Aina Nergaard built through simplified forms, saturated color, and strong vertical structure. Elongated figures move through a layered architectural space populated with floating heart motifs, creating a scene that feels both symbolic and theatrical. Warm oranges, magentas, violets, and deep browns are balanced against pale geometric planes and rhythmic linear elements throughout the composition.
As with much of Nergaard’s work, the painting emphasizes emotional atmosphere over realism, relying on color relationships and intuitive balance to create a sense of harmony and movement. The textured painted surface and flattened perspective reinforce the work’s modernist sensibility while maintaining a playful, approachable energy.
About the Artist:
Aina Nergaard-Nammack (1930–2026) was a Spanish-born abstract painter known for her vibrant, intuitive compositions and lifelong dedication to color, balance, and movement. Born into a family with a long artistic tradition among the women, she moved to the United States with her husband in the late 1950s and later lived and worked in Alexandria, Virginia before settling in Lewes, Delaware. A highly prolific artist throughout her long career, Aina created bold abstract works in which form and color remain carefully in equilibrium. Relying heavily on intuition, she sought to capture the emotional feeling of a scene rather than strict realism, repeatedly refining her compositions in an effort to “avoid chaos” and achieve the simple yet strong visual impact that defines her work.
