Artist Bio:
Alvin Hattorf was a Virginia painter known for expressive landscapes and abstracted interpretations of natural and urban settings. Born in Newport News and raised in Richmond, he served in World War I before working for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company until his retirement in 1951. Hattorf began painting in the 1930s after taking a class in Denver and later studied with Vaclav Vytlacil and Morris Kantor at the Art Students League in New York, as well as at the Henry Hensche School of Art in Massachusetts. His bold use of color and dynamic compositions reflect a lifelong engagement with form, light, and atmosphere. A notable collection of his work is held by Virginia Union University.
