About the Artist: Joy Brown (b. 1951) lives and has her studio in Kent, CT. “My art reflects the influence of my childhood in Japan and of the rigorous discipline of my apprenticeship in traditional Japanese wood-fired ceramics.” Her work has evolved from vessels and animal shapes to the human-like forms and abstract wall reliefs of recent years. For the past 20 years, she has also been working in bronzemost recently in China, where she has made larger-than-life figures for public spaces, similar to her nine such figures uniquely placed along New York Citys Broadway in 2017. Even in their smallest iterations, her figures are peaceful, calm, accepting. There is no hint of conflict or violence, just a sense of stillness and a welcoming completeness. There is also a sense of universality in the appearance and the facial projections of her figures."
