Artist Bio:
Virginia artist Marcia Solomon Schwan (1930–2022) was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and lived much of her life in Virginia. Art was a defining element in her life—a passion that began in childhood, continued through her school years, and endured across decades. As a youth, she won first prize in a competition hosted by The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. While painting daily in her home studio, Marcia audited art classes at Old Dominion University taught by the late artists Charles Sibley and Norman Goodwin, both of whom became her mentors and close friends.
She developed strong ties within the Tidewater art community, exhibiting her work alongside fellow Virginia artists in regional museum and gallery shows. Schwan’s abstract works are distinguished by bold color blocks, textured surfaces, and a rhythmic interplay of form that reflect her disciplined yet intuitive creative process.
