Octavio Ponzanelli (1879  1932)

Octavio Ponzanelli was a renowned Italian-Mexican sculptor. Born in Carrara, Italy, Ponzanelli came from a region known for its marble quarries and sculpting traditions. He was mentored by Auguste Rodin in Paris before moving to Mexico between 1903 and 1904. Ponzanelli's collaborations with well-known architects, such as Adamo Boari, led him to participate in the design and construction of Teatro Nacional in Mexico City, now Palacio de Bellas Artes. Between 1907 and 1910, Ponzanelli worked as a stonemason and sculptor on the Columna de la Independencia, under Enrique Alciati's direction. Ponzanelli's legacy showcases his mastery of marble and bronze, blending European techniques with Mexican influences, establishing him as an influential figure in Mexico's art scene.
